Unfortunately, in these times, there has been an increase in violence toward Asian and Asian Americans as some falsely blame them for the COVID-19 crisis since the virus has its origins in China. Clearly this belief or acting out on it is never acceptable. For those who may feel anxiety in this climate, following are some strategies and resources.
Problem-Focused Coping Strategies
- Reflect on and name the process of oppression.
- Prepare for potential future encounters.
- Avoid oppressive environments.
- Build boundaries if you cannot avoid certain people or environments. Boundaries also apply to social media and news outlets.
Support-Seeking Coping Strategies
- Engage with your community.
- Rely on your social supports.
- Seek affirmation, acknowledgement, and validation. Check this article for more information.
- Cultural storytelling and pride. Check out this podcast for ideas.
- Use campus resources and seek counseling if needed.
