Suicide Prevention Outreach Team (SPOT)

Body

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for students aged 18-24. Life can feel overwhelming
at times. Noticing that a friend is acting differently than they usually do can be scary.
Unfortunately, many have the misconception that talking about suicide will cause it to happen.
This is not true, and SPOT works to train our campus community about how to identify signs
that someone may be suicidal and how to approach them and connect them to resources if you’re
worried.

Summary

Outreach and trainings focus on:

  • Recognizing signs of distress.
  • Responding to distressed/distressing students.
  • Referring students for professional help.

Our mission is to ensure all students, staff, and faculty are provided opportunities to expand their knowledge of suicide prevention and support distressed and distressing peers, colleagues, and students.

We understand that people in marginalized populations are at increased risk for distress and
suicidality. Therefore, part of this mission involves specifically tailoring culturally responsive
outreach for campus units serving marginalized communities through collaboration with
Counseling Center outreach teams.
