Sankofa Black Student Outreach
Sankofa acts as a liaison to Black student organizations and assists in research on Black student needs and concerns.
The idea of Sankofa comes to us from the Akan people of West Africa, and it translates as “go back to fetch it, ” which highlights the importance of using lessons learned from the past to move forward more enlightened. This is the guiding principle that the Sankofa team employs when engaging in outreach efforts with students.
Examples of Our Outreach Activities
- Being present on campus to build community. We show up in many ways, including on panels, conference presentations, workshops, tabling events, and class presentations.
- Upon request, Sankofa conducts workshops and activities. Past topics include managing race-related stress, developing healthy relationships, self-care, time management, and weekly consultations (Sit with Sankofa) at the Bruce Nesbitt African American Cultural Center (BNAACC).
